What’s Causing Me To Have Gum Disease?

Periodontitis, also known as gum disease or periodontal disease, begins with bacterial development in your mouth and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated due to damage of the tissue that surrounds your teeth.

Bacteria in the mouth infect the tissue surrounding the tooth, producing inflammation and periodontal disease. When bacteria remain on the teeth for an extended period of time, they form a film called plaque, which eventually hardens to tartar, also known as calculus. Tartar buildup can develop below the gum line, making cleaning the teeth more difficult. The tartar can only be removed and the periodontal disease process stopped by a dental health specialist.

Here are some Periodontitis symptoms to look out for:

  • Missing teeth
  • Gums that are swollen
  • Gums that are reddish or purplish in tint
  • Sore gums
  • Poor breath
  • Chewing discomfort
  • You have new gaps or holes between your teeth
  • Gum recession (the pulling away of the gums from the teeth)
  • Tooth decay

Periodontitis can ruin the supporting structures of your teeth, including the bones in your jaw if it is not treated sooner. During a dental examination, Glojas experts will be able to spot early signs of periodontitis. We can keep track of your periodontal health over time to ensure it doesn’t deteriorate. This is why it is critical to see a dentist on a regular basis for a screening.

Treatment may include any or all of the following, or a combination of them:

Removal of tartar (calculus) and plaque beneath the gums

In the early stages of the condition, deep cleaning (also known as scaling and root planing) can help eliminate tartar behind the gums and diseased tissue. It can also smoothen the teeth’s damaged root surfaces. After that, the gums can re-attach to the teeth.

Medicine

Antibacterial medications can be applied locally to periodontal pockets or administered orally.

Surgery

When the disease has progressed, the infected areas beneath the gums are cleaned, and the tissues are reshaped or replaced.
